Members of the Manitoba Genealogical Society Inc. have transcribed monumental inscriptions for over 1400 cemeteries within Manitoba. Copies of these transcriptions are held at the MGS Resource Centre and may be viewed there by MGS members without charge and by others upon payment of a daily research fee. Follow this link for additional Resource Centre Information. Copies of most cemetery transcriptions may be purchased through the MGS. The remainder of this page describes how to locate and order a particular cemetery transcript.
Many Manitoba cemetery names are generic in nature and often do not adequately describe the area they serve. Thus the MGS has indexed its cemetery transcriptions by the name of the Manitoba Rural Municipality (or RM) in which the cemetery is located and in a few cases by city name (e.g., Brandon and Winnipeg). A knowledge of which RM a particular town, village, or homestead is located may be needed to locate a cemetery. Note also that persons were not infrequently interred in a cemetery other than in RM in which they resided. Finally, in some cases, transcripts of several smaller and/or co-located cemeteries have been combined into one item for purposes of indexing and sale.
A master surname index for all transcribed cemeteries is maintained at the MGS Resource Centre which may also be of assistance in selecting the desired cemetery transcript.
The list of transcribed cemeteries is available by clicking here:
MGS Cemetery Price List 2012
These listings should be read in four columns as follows:
MGS Cemetery Reference Number - Given name (including colloquial name if applicable) - Year cemetery was transcribed - Number of pages in transcription - Cost to purchase including copying, handling, and postage (GST is not applicable).
Eg., the following entry:
346 Dunkinville Anglican aka Grahamville 1988 7 $2.50
should be read as meaning that the Dunkinville Anglican Cemetery, also known as the Grahamville Cemetery, located in the RM of Minitonas was transcribed in 1988, the transcript is indexed as MGS #346 and consists of seven pages and is available at a cost of $2.50.
