The Winnipeg branch of the Manitoba Genealogical Society Inc. was formed in 1979 under the by-laws of the Society to provide opportunities for persons interested in family history in the South eastern area of Manitoba to share experiences, assist one another and expand their research skills. At the Branch Meeting of 18 April 2005, a motion was adopted to formally change the name of the Branch to "The Southeast and Winnipeg Branch of the Manitoba Genealogical Society". The purpose of this change is to more accurately reflect the interests and location of Branch members. The objectives of the Southeast and Winnipeg Branch are to work locally for the Society's objectives, namely:

The SouthEast & Winnipeg Branch announces a NEW Group - The Writers Group

Sparked by Susan Wellman’s recent presentations on writing memoirs at our regular monthly meetings, several members have formed a Writers Group.  This group is open to all Branch members.  Check the program list below or the MGS Calendar for dates and times.

While the structure of the group is still taking shape, the concept is to hold supportive meetings for genealogists who want to write our family histories NOW, not ‘some day’.  While we may have occasional presentations to get our creative juices flowing, the focus of each meeting will be to help and support each other’s desire to write about our families.

  • Members will share our writing with each other at the meetings — both what we write between meetings as well as what we actually write at the meetings.
  • Members will offer each other constructive feedback, with a kind eye!
  • We WON’T criticize grammar, spelling, etc.
  • We WILL talk about ways the writer could expand and improve his or her piece.
  • Everyone will benefit from the discussions.

We’ll be exploring writing techniques — how to find and develop a theme, how to add details to catch the reader’s interest, and how to tighten or expand our writing.

Everyone with a willingness to write and share is welcome! Bring a notebook and your favourite pen to write with.

Here are our upcoming programs

All programs are on Mondays, start at 7:30 pm and are at the MGS Library and Resource Centre unless otherwise listed. Please remember to bring indoor footware as outdoor shoes/boots are not allowed in the MGS Centre during winter months. Programs listed subject to change.

Note Takers Wanted!

We have had several requests to include notes from presentations in the Ezine. Several members can not make meetings on Monday nights while others don't travel at night anymore and would like more information on the presentations. If you take notes, are you willing to share them with fellow members? We know it would be greatly appreciated. Let Gordon McBean know if you are willing are willing to help out.

Volunteers are needed to help staff the Wednesday evening

The branch needs volunteers for the fall to help cover our opening the MGS Resource Centre on Wednesday evening. Anyone know of a person? Would you be interested? Volunteering is a great way to learn more about the resources at the centre. You will be paired with one or two volunteers that will guide you and help you learn more about researching there. The commitment is for one evening a month. Interested parties can send us an email.
